Everything you need to know about the Leica Summilux-C Primes

full set leica summilux-c primes

What are they?

The Leica Summilux-C Prime Lenses are a groundbreaking new line of PL mount primes that are designed to deliver ultra-high optical performance for both film and digital images.

Look

The Leica Summilux-C Prime Lenses have an impressive cinematic quality, making them the go-to choice for some of the most stylish shows in recent history (Justice League, Stranger Things and the live action version of Beauty and the Beast all reportedly used these lenses). The optical quality is incredibly high, while still offering the soft three-dimensional look that audiences love so much.

Size & weight

These lenses have a unique design, which allows them to be far smaller than any other lenses below T2.0. Measuring just 142mm (5.6”) long and weighing between 1.6 – 1.8kg (3.5 – 4 pounds) means lens changes are easier than ever before.

Smaller lenses also means smaller, lighter camera packages and cases as well as significantly smaller rigs.

Focus

The full set is comprised of 12 focal lengths, from 16mm to 135mm, giving cinematographers more flexibility when it comes to shot composition.

Leica has introduced a unique focusing mechanism with the Summulix-C Primes, which expands the focus scale in the most critical range – getting rid of the need for larger lenses which accommodate a focus ring with more witness marks.

Speed

At T1.4 these are some of the fastest lenses available, but unlike traditional lenses they are designed to perform at their best when wide open. This makes their low light performance far superior to other lenses in the market place.

Ease of use

What makes the Summilux-C Prime Lenses stand out is that all 12 lenses are almost identical in size and weight. This makes changing lenses much simpler when compared with other lenses – there is no need to rebalance the camera after changing from one lens to another. DOPs looking to shoot handheld, or who are using cranes or rigs will find the Leica primes much easier to use compared with other lens sets.
