NAB 2017 was full of exciting announcements, new toys, and plenty of updates. Although we were unable to attend this year due to work load, we followed all news with great interest and thought we’d put together a brief post with some of the highlights.

 

ARRI Alexa SXT-W

The big ARRI news came in the form of their Alexa SXT-W. This model is set to replace the SXT Plus and Studio cameras (with upgrades being offered for current owners) and provides a fully integrated wireless system within the body allowing for quicker builds, less interference, and a more ergonomic set up.

The built-in WVR-1 transmitter will work with up to four receivers (either stand-alone WVR-1 RXs or the Starlite ARRI-WVS) which could save on unnecessary loop-throughs and complicated cable runs, and you can have up to six channels on the same set – perfect for multi-cam!

It’s not just video transmission though; the wifi will allow for wireless colour management on set as well as working seamlessly with the WCU-4 and the Web Remote.

Although, it’s not yet on sale having not received authorization by the Federal Communications Commission, we’re watching with keen eyes!

 

Cooke S7/i Full Frame Plus Prime Lenses

Designed to cover the full sensor area of a RED Weapon and a 46.31mm image circle, this adds a sense of future-proofing to the Cooke range.

The new range will include 18mm, 25mm, 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, and 135mm and all will have a true aperture of T2.0. They share a front diameter of 110mm to save on changing donuts and back plates on matte boxes.

These aren’t light lenses weighing approx. 3.5kg each but they retain that beautiful Cooke-look with the added versatility of the full frame coverage.

 

 

Zeiss CP.3 Lenses

Zeiss have announced a new set of CP.3 lenses with improved sharpness that retain the interchangeable lens mounts which make these work for every budget.

Lengths 18-21mm will offer wide stops of T2.9, with lengths 25-135mm offering T2.1, and they’re full frame coverage, unlike the 18mm CP.2, future-proof these as we move towards larger sensors.

The main difference between the CP.2s and the CP.3s is the eXtended Data Technology which provides information about the lens distortion and shading characteristics in real-time. This will help on set with monitoring and also in post.

And of course, they’re maintaining the small, lightweight nature of the CP.2s which makes these range of lenses perfect for drones, gimbals, and hand-held set ups. The size and weight is more consistent across the CP.3 range which will make lens swaps quicker when re-balancing as well as them all sharing a 95mm front diameter. All to help with speed on set!

 

DJI Ronin 2

The main difference between the Ronin 2 and the original Ronin, is the addition of an integrated touch screen controller and a payload that’s almost double.

It can now handle up to 13kgs and features a larger camera cage with adjustable arms, which will handle DSLR cameras to high end camera rigs.

The remote has been completely redesigned and offers two-person operation with a range of nearly a mile and the Ronin 2 body will work more seamlessly with the RED camera when connected via cable.

The power options for the Ronin 2 are vastly improved with the batteries now offering 2.5hours of runtime when powering the gimbal and a RED Dragon and are hot-swappable helping to speed things up on set.

 

 

Teradek

The Teradek Serv and Serv Pro allow for a new range of iOS monitoring on set. It offers HD real-time monitoring to iPhones and iPads via the Wifi. With only a 4-frame delay, even more of your crew can see a video feed without having to be in Video Village.

The TX can be mounted on camera or at VV and provides 300ft of range or much further when connected to a Wifi point.

The iOS App features built-in histogram, false-colour, waveform monitor, focus peaking vectorscope and anamorphic desqueeze making this very versatile.

 

 

 

 

Wooden Camera Directors Monitor Cage V2

Wooden Camera have always been very good at creating sleek and lightweight cages but their V2 features some very handy improvements.

A padded neck strap makes it more comfortable over long periods and the connection points allow it to face you when not being held too.

An adjustable sunhood supplies shade for a wide range of monitors and the foldable handles allow for quick pack down times, especially when being kept in floor bags.

The battery plate mount swings away so that cable management is easier and faster and it also provides mounting points for a range of wireless systems such as Teradek and Paralinx.

 

Sony A9

The Sony A9 was announced not as a replacement to the A7s but as an alternative with a range of different features.

It includes the world’s first Stacked Full Frame CMOS sensor which is composed of two different layers with the first absorbing the light from the lens and the second composed of a buffer memory and frontend LSI processing unit.

The A9 is a great stills camera with 693 AF points that cover 93% of the screen as well as the 5 axis stabilization system that no other DSLR range comes close to; a system that works with Sony mount lenses or when using an adapter.

It does also shoot 4k at up to 30fps but also records at 6k and makes a lossless comparison to 4k providing you with an excellent dynamic range, less noise and better colour contrast.
